A bill to strip the Boy Scouts of America of its tax-exempt status because of the organization’s refusal to allow gay troop leaders has stalled in the Legislature.

SB323 by Democratic Sen. Ricardo Lara of Bell Gardens would deny state tax breaks to nonprofit youth groups that discriminate on the basis of gender identity, race, sexual orientation, nationality, religion or religious affiliation.

Because the legislation is a tax measure, it requires a two-thirds vote in both houses to pass.

The Senate approved it in May, but it was placed on the inactive file in the Assembly on Thursday. Lara could bring it back if he gets the needed votes by Friday’s legislative deadline.

Conservative legal groups had threatened to sue if the bill became law.

This is the most stupid act of legislation in quite some time. I understand the sentiment behind the measure, but it seems wrong to me to punish children for an organization’s failings. We won’t improve our message of equality through legislation, we will shift public opinion through openly serving our communities as ourselves. I have won over many ’conservatives’ through public service and genuine acts of kindness, not by telling people they’re wrong and we are right. Our cause will progress as more gay men and women live truthfully and humbly, thereby proving we are good citizens and great human beings. Forcing one’s viewpoint and morality on anyone else is exactly what we must combat, not embrace! This is precisely what the hate mongers want us to do so they can continue to claim gays are forcing our "lifestyle" on others while they force theirs on us. Grow up!

I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. It must be great living in a bubble, when we have to make laws to protect us from hate mongers who wish to hurt us.Maybe your a little more patient than I.

You take public money you must toe the public line (tax exempt status is in effect taking public money) you want to be exclusive then do not expect exempt tax status.
