Poll :: Brits Okay With Gay Royal Baby
If Prince William and wife Kate Middleton’s newborn baby boy, who will one day be king of Britain, turned out to be gay, 83 percent of British citizens would not have a problem with it, according to a new poll.
A YouGov poll, which surveyed 2,074 adults, for Stonewall, a UK-based LGBT equality group, showed that an overwhelming majority of British people would be "very comfortable," "comfortable" or "neutral" if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s unnamed baby was gay, lesbian or bisexual. The poll was conducted before the couple announced the sex of their child.
"Millions of people will be celebrating today’s news, just as millions last week celebrated the news of equal marriage in England and Wales," said Ben Summerskill, chief executive of Stonewall, on Tuesday, according to International Business Times. "Happily, since last week every child born in Britain is born into a society where gay people are now equal in law."
IBT reports that there have been rumors throughout history that members of the royal family engaged in same-sex relationships, but there has never been an out member.
"If the baby is gay, he will be the first openly-homosexual British monarch ever," IBT writes.
The newborn is third in line to the throne after his father, Prince Williams and grandfather, Charles. The baby weighed in at 8lbs 6oz.
On July 17, Britain legalized same-sex marriage.
When the Huffington Post reported on the poll, the Virginia-based conservative content analysis organization Media Research Center’s website NewsBusters, which is "dedicated to exposing & combating liberal media bias," slammed the story writing, "The royal prince is barely a day old, but already lefties are crossing their fingers in hopes that he’s gay."
"Huffington Post hyped what may be the dumbest polling ever this morning - a survey claiming that a majority of Brits would react favorably if the son born yesterday to Prince William and Kate Middleton would come out as a homosexual in the future," the July 22 article reads. "The survey was conducted by the ’lesbian, gay, and bisexual advocacy group Stonewall’ (because, of course, they’d have an unbiased and objective viewpoint)."
Their "unbiased" article goes on to say that the poll results are "questionable" and adds, "The jury’s still out on whether gay rights groups will start hoping for the little prince to be a little ’princess boy.’ But they obviously hope that, at least by the time he’s a king, the poor kid will be a ’queen.’"
