Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said in videotaped remarks that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of hell" meant to convince people that they do not need a savior.

The Republican lawmaker made those comments during a speech Sept. 27 at a sportsman’s banquet at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell. Broun, a medical doctor, is running for re-election in November unopposed by Democrats.

"God’s word is true," Broun said, according to a video posted on the church’s website. "I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior."

The Earth is about 9,000 years old and that it was made in six days.

Broun also said that he believes the Earth is about 9,000 years old and that it was made in six days. Those beliefs are held by fundamentalist Christians who believe the creation accounts in the Bible to be literally true.

Broun spokeswoman Meredith Griffanti told the Athens Banner-Herald (http://bit.ly/Us4O0Z ) that Broun was recorded speaking off-the-record to a church group about his religious beliefs. He sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

It seems unlikely that Broun’s remarks were supposed to be kept private. The banquet was advertised, Broun spoke before an audience and the video of his remarks was posted on the church’s website.

He should have his medical license revoked. What a nut job.

I’d sure hate to be a Georgian and try to explain the election of this crackpot to Congress. He’s a few peaches short of a cobler.

And we think fundamentalist muslims are messed up?!?! Geesh!

Unbelievable! An Arkansas Rep just said the same stupid thing. He is a RepuKKKican, of course.

I’m ready to move to Europe. The USA is becoming an ignorant intellectual wasteland.

  • Oh Jed said:, 2012-10-07 20:45:09

Don’t go. Look on the bright side, all these tired, ignorant, repressed old men already have one foot in the grave. In another 7 to 10 years many of them will be long gone... Of course, we’ll then be dealing with the aftermath of their legacy.

I have to wonder if he is from the pits of hell trying to win the entire church for satin by installing hate to their respective hearts.

I don’t understand, does that mean dinosaurs are not real?

  • Anonymous, 2012-10-09 03:25:22

Dinosaurs are real... They were rode by humans and helped with farming. Also dinosaurs were very active in the church.Lol

this means that the Flintstones are historically accurate

No it means these bible thumpers are complete morons. The bible was written by men in an age where science didn’t exist. There would be no foundation to explain humanity but for a Devine miracle. Yet here we are in 2012 and the evangelicals cling to literal interpretation of a book of fairy tales. It is truly amazing how these people can abandon scientific fact for the pure fiction of God snapping his fingers and making Adam and Eve appear out of thin air. And don’t even get me started on fear o witchcraft. Fear of facts is more like it.

His preferred treatment for all diseases is exorcism??? Loves living the Dark Ages?

  • Wayne M., 2012-10-09 17:09:47

Misrepresentative Broun is living proof that facts mean nothing to those who refuse to keep open minds. He is living proof of what is wrong with so many in CONgress (the opposite of PROgress) as minds, like parachutes, only function when they are open. Furthermore, as a Christian, I can testify that God is not a magician, but powerful enough to work through natural processes - and that includes evolution.
