The nation's fourth-largest city puts on a Texas-sized celebration of diversity. Beware of stereotyping this deep-in-the-heart-of-Dixie city. Houston can boast the largest city in the country with an out-gay mayor. Not only that, but Annise Parker cruised to re-election with nary a word mentioned about her sexual identity. Mayor Parker is only one story among many, however, that attest to the strides the Bayou City has made in embracing its diversity — and it's all on glorious display during a Pride celebration that last year attracted 325,000 people. The celebration is always held on the last Saturday in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots that began it all. Back in 1997, then-Houston City Councilmember Annise Parker arranged for a parade ordinance that allowed the nation's only nighttime Pride march. Since then, the parade has been held in the cool of evening. Y'all come on down and be a part of this friendly, all-inclusive series of events!
