Gay Mexican Tortured, Stoned
A gay, HIV-positive Mexican man was found dead Feb. 21 with his hands tied behind his back and a cardboard sign on his body reading in Spanish, "This is what happens to me for going around infecting people with AIDS."
48-year-old Alejandro Fuentes Mejia was reportedly tortured, beaten with rocks, and suffocated, according to an account blabbeando.blogspot.com/2008/02/update-more-shocking-details-emerge-in.html posted on Blabbeando Feb. 29.
Mejia’s body was left lying on a dirt road near the Institute of Social Security and Services, where he was employed. Mejia was still wearing his work uniform at the time of his murder, reported Blabbeando.
Blabbeando cited the Mexican LGBT site Anodis.com as reporting that the sign left on top of Mejia’s body, made of yellow cardboard, also carried a second message: "This is what happens to me for having infected my son with AIDS."
Anodis.com also said that Mejias’ murder has sparked demands for a full investigation into his torture and death, as well as hate crimes protection legislation for Mexican LGBTs, Blabbeando reported.
The story was also reported in an earlier article posted at Blabbeando on Feb. 25. Noted the earlier article, "the language in the note is striking because it is the same language that the extreme right in Latin America uses against the gay community when blaming it for the general ills of a society (as do homophobic extreme right wing bigots in the United States)."
