Dunkirk

Greg Vellante READ TIME: 2 MIN.

Faces and time, that's what you get when you experience Christopher Nolan's war film "Dunkirk." No bloody carnage. No sensationalism. No political agenda. Just the machine of war and the people involved within it.

Unlike so many war films before it, Nolan's lens is fascinated with the stories told in the eyes, emotions and determined will to live that can be witnessed in the close-ups and profiles of this film's exceptional ensemble cast. You may not remember many names by the end of "Dunkirk," but you'll most certainly remember the faces.

Through this film, Nolan reminds you that the chess pieces in the horrific game we call war are actual human beings with stories to tell, emotions to feel and lives to experience. Within their eyes, Nolan reveals to us a group of young men who only want to live to see tomorrow.

With its exceptional photography, captured through 65mm cameras and released in exclusive 70mm presentations earlier this year, "Dunkirk" is a phenomenal achievement in cinema and arguably Nolan's best film. His attention to visual detail and impeccable sound design makes "Dunkirk" the perfect match for the newly-available 4K Ultra HD format, and, my oh my, does this film transfer well to the smaller screen when utilizing this ultra-rich, finely-detailed form of physical media. To experience "Dunkirk" at home in 4K Ultra HD is likely the closest you will ever come to the unmatched theatrical experience of seeing this film in 70mm or 70mm IMAX.

The visuals are remarkable in this home release, as is the booming sound output. This is a film where sound is key, as you'll find yourself anxiously cowering on your sofa to the sounds of falling bombs and approaching airborne gunfire. The visceral reactions "Dunkirk" is able to create through its cinematic techniques are something to surely marvel at, and thankfully viewers will be able to undergo a similar experience with this 4K Ultra HD release.
