Lock N' Load With R. Lee Ermey - Season One

Jim Halterman READ TIME: 2 MIN.

It's abundantly evident that the History Channel's series Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey isn't for everyone. First of all, this militainment focuses on military weaponry through the ages. So, anyone against firearms, this show is not for you. If your someone who not only has no issues with firearms but wants to know the origins as told by a militant former marine (Ermey), then Lock N' Load's first season arriving on DVD should make you very happy.

Each episode focuses on the Ermey, in his dry, authoritative demeaner, as he explains about weapons such as artillary, machine guns (two episodes worth!), tanks, pistols, shotguns, rifles and blades, to name a few. While the idea of a history show about weapons sounds less than exciting, it's Ermey who holds the show together not only with his own interest and knowledge but also his delivery.

Ermey is not only a retired US Marine Corps drill instructor but he's even been Golden Globe nominated for his role in the classic Stanley Kubrick war film, Full Metal Jacket and has appeared in many other films such as Mississippi Burning and X Men 3. He's lighthearted but still likes to look at the camera during the Lock N' Load episodes and give orders directly to the viewer.

The DVD of the first season is light on extras but the 4-discs are more enjoyable than expected even if you are not a fan of guns. The show isn't about taking a for or against stance against guns but truly gives the historical background of some of the weapons that have played the role in the past, present and future of our world.

The first season was fairly successful for The History Channel so one can hope a second season of R. Lee Ermey will be coming down the pike. Yes, Sir!
