To kick off its star-filled 12th season, MenAlive-The Orange County Gay Men’s Chorus-is set to welcome the legendary Liza Minnelli as its very special guest star. The inimitable showbiz icon will perform with the chorus at the 3,000-seat Segerstrom Hall on the campus of The Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. On Thursday, December 13 and Friday, December 14, Minnelli will dazzle the audience with a full signature set, accompanied by her own band and will collaborate with the chorus on special select numbers.

"Liza Minnelli will be there in full force," according to MenAlive’s Artistic Director Rich Cook, "It’s really going to be a spectacular show in which the chorus will open and then be joined by Liza. She is doing many of her classics, some by herself and some with the chorus," Cook says, noting the numbers to be sung with the guys in the chorus are "Cabaret," "Maybe This Time" and "But the World Goes Round." She will also be doing some holiday numbers with the chorus including, "It’s the Holiday Season," he adds, noting she has a variety of other numbers she’s working on alone with her band.

"It’s going to be a great palette of a variety of songs with a music mix of Broadway, with holiday and pop, along with one more serious folksong number. There will be a full band, which is going to be Liza’s personal group as the house band for the entire show, which makes for a great collaboration between everyone," says Cook, who also founded the chorus in 2001.

He describes the upcoming performance as one set to be filled with incredible costuming and dancing with about 130 very talented singers set against spectacular backdrops, complete with LED lighting. "Undoubtedly the combination of it all makes for a very stimulating high-energy show," he adds.

Throughout her lifetime Liza has supported various charities and causes. She served on the board of directors of The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential for 20 years. She also has dedicated much time to amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. In 1994, Minnelli recorded the Kander & Ebb tune "The Day After That" and donated the proceeds to AIDS research. That same year she performed the song in front of hundreds of thousands in Central Park at the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

Today, when her busy schedule allows, she works with students at The Actor’s Studio teaching master classes in acting and singing. Her well-known generosity of spirit, enthusiasm and commitment to her craft are unequaled in the entertainment industry, where she continues her extraordinary career with ongoing concert tours around the world.

"We are all extremely excited to have Liza Minnelli, who is an American treasure and Broadway icon. She hasn’t been to Orange County in almost 20 years, so we really look forward to this being a smash," Cook concludes.
Together with the MenAlive Chorus, which in just 12 seasons has risen to become one of the nation’s premiere musical organizations, Ms. Minnelli will surely make A Winter Spectacular the season’s must-see musical event!
